Eleanor the Great centers on Eleanor Morgenstein, a spirited 94-year-old woman who — after the death of her long-time best friend — moves from Florida to New York to live with her daughter and grandson. Feeling untethered and lonely, she hesitantly tries out activities at a local community center. There she is mistakenly welcomed into a Holocaust-survivors’ discussion group, and in a moment of grief and longing for connection, she begins sharing her friend’s harrowing past as if it were her own. What starts as a way to belong evolves into a complicated emotional journey: Eleanor forms an unlikely bond with a young college student, and as relationships deepen, the weight of her deception and the meaning of identity, memory, loneliness, and belonging come into sharper focus. The film explores grief, intergenerational friendship, cultural memory, and the sometimes messy impulse to belong — but does so with compassion, humor, and heart. The film stars June Squibb as Eleanor Morgenstein, bringing warmth and depth to the role of a 94-year-old woman searching for connection. Erin Kellyman appears as Nina, the college student who forms an unexpected bond with Eleanor. Jessica Hecht plays Eleanor’s daughter, Lisa, balancing concern and frustration as her mother navigates a new chapter in life. Chiwetel Ejiofor portrays Roger, Nina’s father, adding another layer of emotional complexity to the story. Together, the cast creates a heartfelt, intimate ensemble that anchors the film’s themes of grief, identity, and belonging.
